Originally installed in 2005, the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District’s wastewater treatment plant location at mile marker 100 in Key Largo, Florida utilized a small alternative sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for treating the wastewater from selected areas of the District while the vacuum collections system was completed. After five years, the plant was ready for an upgrade to address the increasing flow rates of the nearly 15,000 EDUs it currently serves.
The district began exploring options including five-stage oxidation ditch and SBR technologies. In addition, the planning staff visited nearby installations to see the potential technologies in operation. Following the selection research, Key Largo chose a three-basin AquaSBR® sequencing batch reactor followed by two AquaDisk® cloth media filters (12-disk units) for its upgrade.
To enhance the plant’s process control capabilities, we also incorporated an IntelliPro® process monitoring and control system which works hand-in-hand with our SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system powered by Wonderware InTouch.
The new treatment plant went into operation in October of 2010 and is designed to meet Florida’s advanced water treatment (AWT) requirements. Since our Grand Opening, we have won the prestigious Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s 2013 Award of Excellence and the Florida Rural Water Association’s Medium Wastewater Plant of the Year for 2013 and 2014.
